It’s heartening to see that sustainable commuting is on the rise. Research from Mobilityways shows that trips by train, bus and car sharing all increased between 2022 and 2023. However there is still a long way to go, as 43% of UK commuters travel in a car alone.
There are benefits all around to commuters changing their travel habits. Walking or cycling to work brings all the mental and physical health benefits of regular exercise, and in turn this saves money for employers – with less sick days and a more productive workforce. A strong sustainable commuting offer can also set companies apart from their competitors, as potential business partners pay increasing attention to climate credentials. But perhaps most importantly, sustainable commuting can reduce health inequalities. Air pollution in cities is concentrated in poorer areas, where residents are 3 times less likely to own a car. This means the negative health consequences of high pollution are inflicted upon vulnerable communities by people driving through. By reducing car use, particularly at peak times, we can reduce the amount of preventable illnesses caused by air pollution.
